Frequently Asked Questions

Who can submit articles to Indie Skeptics?
Anyone who has something to say about skepticism. The site will take care of all technical requirements. Simply e-mail your article in plain text, a simple document, or even as the body of the e-mail itself and we’ll do the rest.

Will you publish every article you receive?
No. The site maintains editorial control over what is published and isn’t, but we will have a very liberal publishing policy so far as is possible. Articles may be rejected for being off-topic, poorly researched, or simply uninteresting.

What organizations is Indie Skeptics associated with?
As the name suggests, Indie Skeptics is associated with no other organizations. The words here are those only of their author. No other endorsement or responsibility is implied or  should be inferred.

What is a “Skeptic”?
The answer to this question is a bit complicated. There is currently a loosely-organized movement around the world of “skeptics,” who are basically people that believe what the evidence dictates rather than what their own emotions or desires might point to. There is a lot of variety here, and many disagreements. For the purposes of this site, a skeptic is anyone who chooses to label themselves thus, and can demonstrate reasonable critical thinking skill.

What about Atheism?
I’ve personally contrasted atheism and skepticism quite a bit, and I want to be clear that the policy on IndieSkeptics is that the person writing the article can say what they’d like. As such, I will publish articles about atheism if they have some relationship to skepticism. If you wish to write an article that directly disagrees with my published stance that atheism is distinct from skepticism, I’ll publish it so long as it’s appropriate.

Why start another “blog” when there are so many already?
While there are quite a few blogs out there, there are no skeptical blogs that I’m aware of that will allow casual bloggers, non-technical people, and people unaffiliated with an organization to submit articles. It could be that this site is redundant and will fail to catch on. If so, it will be retired. However, in the marketplace of free ideas, the only way to see if something will work is to try it, so here we are.

How much do you pay authors?
This site does not turn a profit, and as such, there is no revenue opportunity here for writers. If writers want to include code for ads in their articles, it will be considered, but currently the site costs the owner money every month, and there’s simply no budget to pay writers.

Can I publish an article here if it is/will be published somewhere else?
Yes.  In fact, this site encourages you to publish here first as a testing ground. If the article is popular and another publication wants it, feel free to put it there as well. If your article has already appeared somewhere else, that will be taken into consideration when it’s to be published here, but there is no policy against re-publishing.

Who owns the rights to material published here?
The writer owns all rights to his/her work. Indie Skeptics will remove an article at the request of the author. Indie Skeptics does demand that the writer actually own the rights to all submitted work, including photographs. If this is suspected of not being the case, the material will be removed immediately and the writer may be banned from participating in the future.

If I want to contact an author, how can I do that?
Indie Skeptics will pass along messages to authors with your contact info insofar as it’s possible. That doesn’t mean the author will wish to communicate with you.

Can I publish anonymously? How is my identity protected?
If you wish to publish anonymously, that is allowed. Indie Skeptics will not reveal your identity without a court order. It is up to the author to protect their identity by not revealing info in articles and user names.

Will you publish my bio?
You are free to place 100 words or so at the bottom of your article describing who you are, etc. You’re welcome to place links in that section if you wish. We may consider having a writer’s bio section on the site if there is enough interest.

Why isn’t Jeff running this blog any more?

Jeff has a new job and has found that he no longer has the available time to maintain this blog. Andrew Gould is now your host.
